How to import a report definition file (*.rdl)

If you have one or more Report Definition Files (*.rdl) and you need to import them to Crows Nest, use the steps below.

TIP: If the RDL file already shows the Crows Nest icon you can simply open them and it will import the report (if another app has been installed that edits RDL files you may need to right-click and Open With…Crows Nest). Files imported this way will be processed as outlined below in the ‘Batch Add/Update’ option.

To import a report the logged in user must have the permission enabled ‘Can Edit Custom Reports’

Step-by-step guide

  1. From the drop-down menu, open Settings→Custom Reports. Access to this form is controlled per employee with the security option titled 'Can edit Custom Reports'

  2. Right-click the list of Reports on the left-hand side of the report and select an Import option.

    1. Import New - Use this option to import a single report file. You will be prompted to edit the name of the report before it's imported.

    2. Update From File - Use this option to replace the currently selected report using a single report file.

    3. Batch Add/Update - Use this option to import one or more files at once. The report names will be created automatically based on the report file names. If existing reports are found with names matching the files, they will be replaced.
Note: The ~ character will be replaced with a \ character in the report name. Use the \ character to organize your reports into folders on the Reports form.
Note: Reports with names starting with CN_ will not appear on the Reports form and instead will appear in specific areas of Crows Nest. For example a report named CN_PO_PO will show up as a report on the PO Form with the name of PO.

  3. Test the new report. If the form where the report will be used was already open when you imported the report, try clicking the Refresh button on the toolbar, or try closing and reopening the form.
